By now you have read the announcement from the CATA outlining the fact that they will no longer be mandating regional membership amongst CATA members.
The MATA Board of Directors is frustrated that we are back to where we were this time last year and that this issue continues to persist.  That being said, the MATA will continue to focus on what we can control, which is the value of membership and support we can offer Manitoba Athletic Therapists.
Moving forward, the MATA will continue to:

  • provide local and accessible continuing education opportunities which include member discounts for BLS and SFR recertification's,
  • provide athletic therapy service opportunities throughout the province including strengthening our relationship with the Winnipeg High School Football League and Manitoba Minor Football Association,
  • continue to represent the profession with involvement in the Sports Medicine and Science Council of Manitoba and Manitoba Health Professionals Association Coalition,
  • be the voice of athletic therapy within Sport Manitoba,
  • represent and advocate for athletic therapy with the government of Manitoba as we continue to seek self-regulation (the application was submitted in July and we are awaiting next steps),
  • provide guidance regarding the profession should the navigation of public health orders ever occur again,
  • continue to foster the relationships with MPI and WCB to broaden opportunities for athletic therapists to treat their patients in Manitoba.

Ultimately, the MATA Board will continue to work diligently to advocate for our members and to promote the profession of athletic therapy in Manitoba.
In regards to MATA's relationship with the CATA, we have not closed any doors and are open to working with them and keeping communication lines open in order to best serve the profession.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the bylaw specifically, please direct those to the CATA.  We would encourage our members to attend the Town Hall meeting on November 28, 2022, at 8:00 pm ET where the CATA will be reviewing in further detail the rationale for this decision and allowing members to ask any questions they may have.
Thank you as always for being engaged and active members of the profession.
